One man however, has cut a rather different dash to his contemporaries. Kenny Dalglish, once as taciturn as any of Glasgow's school of management but now reinvented as an avuncular stand-up comedian, may as well be performing with cigar in one hand and glass of single malt in the other when he addresses the press and its attendant television audience.

Dalglish's return to the game after a decade away has allowed him a sense of detachment, an ability to relax and take stock. Being the monarch of the Kop certainly helps; having to win over the fans is often the hardest task for a manager, even if you are Arsene Wenger for example. Dalglish has been in the position of those wracked and ruined managers, and has previously bowed to the same pressures, and may well do so again once granted a more full-time position, but for the moment, enjoyment is the name of the game.

Spirits have been revived at Anfield, and Dalglish can be rightly praised for his part in that. His appointment of Steve Clarke as assistant added know-how to a struggling coaching set-up that had looked so dysfunctional under Roy Hodgson. Meanwhile, the blooding of young players, mostly from the local area, has given the club a signpost to a brighter future, set against previous managers' reliance on mediocre imports.
