A former CEO of an investment firm based in Austin was convicted Wednesday of fraud that target former professional athletes and hundreds of people all over the country taken in by more than $ 50 million.

A federal jury convicted Branham Kurt Barton, 44, in a Ponzi scheme that won the confidence of more than 300 investors - including former NFL player and Heisman Trophy winners, said John E. Murphy, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Texas.

Barton - the founder, president and CEO of Triton Financial - faces life in prison.

The jury convicted Barton in almost 39 charges, the Austin American-Statesman reported. They included conspiracy to commit wire fraud, making false statements to obtain loans from financial institutions and money laundering and one count of securities fraud, 15 counts of wire fraud, five counts of making false statements related to purchase loans and 17 counts of money laundering.

Lawyer Barton, Rip Collins, said Barton was trying to run a legitimate, though poor management business.

Collins said it was "inexcusable" that Barton spent the money of investors in sports cars, fashionable clothes and the University of Texas football tickets luxury suite, but insisted that his client had hoped - even if Things got worse - the company in some way going out.

"I think Kurt Barton was delirious," said Collins. "He became delirious from the point of view he thought he could get (Triton) of the fire. It hung there. "
