Colombia coach Hernan Dario Gomez has warned his side not to take Peru lightly heading into tomorrow's first Copa America quarter-final in Cordoba.

Colombia, the 2001 Copa America champions, progressed through to the last eight after finishing top of Group A - above hosts Argentina - with seven points from a possible nine and they are favourites to get past a Peru side that finished third in Group C.

The Colombians have yet to concede a goal and have also not lost to Peru in seven meetings since 2001, but Gomez is taking nothing for granted ahead of tomorrow's encounter.

He said: "We cannot underestimate Peru. This will be a very even match. It's 11 against 11. Both teams have their chances.''

Midfielder Fredy Guarin echoed those thoughts, adding: "We've already analysed Peru, we know how they play, how they move and who are their best players. They are a team who keep the ball well, who are doing well and that's why they've also got to this stage.

Regarding which players Colombia might need to keep a special eye on, Guarin said: "We need to be careful about all of the Peru side. If we just keep an eye on one or two players, another can go and decide the game.

"Peru count on a very good group, there's Paolo Guerrero, who is a good striker, Juan Vargas, who is very well known in Europe, and there are others who are playing well.''

Peru were last crowned Copa America champions back in 1975 - when they beat Colombia in the final.

Coach Sergio Markarian said of his side's ambitions: "Hopefully we can have a great game and that this will allow is to go through to the semi-finals, which would be very important for Peruvian football.

"It will be a great game against a team who we respect a lot, but we also respect our interests, our history, and the interests of the Peruvian sporting people.''
