Argentina star Lionel Messi insists the criticism directed at him and the team as a whole has strengthened the spirit within the group as they aim to bounce back from a slow start and win the Copa America on home soil.
Messi and co face Uruguay in the quarter-finals tomorrow having failed to win either of their first two group matches and only made the last eight by virtue of a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica last time out.
The Barcelona star was criticised for his level of performance, well below the stellar standards of his club form, but he is adamant it has only strengthened his resolve to do well, and that of the team.
"The insults from the fans bother me and the whole group. We know we didn't play well, and that was the reason (for the insults),'' Messi said.
"Nobody likes to be booed. We suffered, but at the same time that helped us. It made us stronger as a group.
"Regarding the journalists, it's not the first time that this has happened here. But critics don't change my desire to come here and play with the national team. I come to play for Argentina because I feel it, because I want to play and I always try my best.''
Following lacklustre draws against Bolivia and Colombia, Argentina coach Sergio Batista made seven changes for the make-or-break match against Costa Rica and was rewarded with a much-improved display.
Manchester City forward Carlos Tevez and three other players were dropped, Messi was moved to the right and the Real Madrid trio of Fernando Gago, Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain plus Atletico Madrid star Sergio Aguero were drafted in.
Batista has already confirmed he will stick with the same line-up against Uruguay, something which pleases Messi.
"Playing through the middle, I couldn't find the spaces; down the right there were less people around, it was different,'' he admitted.
"Hopefully in the quarter-final match it will be the same. Both teams know there's no room for mistakes now. It's a final.
"Playing against South American teams is always rough. Most of them defend with two four-man lines and it is very difficult to move there.''
On the other side awaits a Uruguay team which exceeded all expectations by reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa last summer, going further than any other South American side in the competition.
Their coach Oscar Tabarez insists winning the match is not as simple as stopping Messi.
"I like the sentence that says: if you have a problem that you can solve, don't worry; if you have a problem that you can't solve, there's no reason to worry either,'' he said.
"Messi can create us a lot of problems, and they won't disappear no matter how much we work on that. So we're focused on what we can do as a team, not just in stopping him.
"Luckily, we can do a lot of things that Messi can't stop.''
Tabarez is confident of springing a shock and eliminating the Copa America hosts.
"One of the keys for this group is to be stubborn. We always believe we can do it. We've worked in every possible aspect, but the truth starts when the ball moves.''
